Hi, Friends! I’m the Play Class Coordinator for Wee Play at Toodleydoo Toys here to share with you a quick highlight of what to expect in the Preschool and Toddler Play classes this month.
Our theme for the month of February is LOVE… only fitting, right? :) We will cover LOTS of different things that we love like our family, friends, and pets. Since this is a broad topic so we will cover all the details in the center descriptions below!
Invitation to Play: (We begin each class with an invitation for children and parents to get busy playing! This activity takes place as wait on all registered attendees to arrive and for the first few minutes of class.)
Our Neighborhood. At this center you and your little one will have the opportunity to explore with houses, people, and cars. This center will allow your little one to work on role and pretend play, making connections, playing with others, and sharing.
Heart Hunt. This week you and your little one will enjoy digging through our pink-tinted rice bin searching for conversation hearts. After finding the hearts little ones will be given the opportunity to match them up to our heart-shaped pattern cards. Toddler Modification- no conversation hearts; tubes, cups, and scoops added.
Friendship Quilt. As we work on the theme of “Friendship” you and your little one will have a great time creating a collaborative “Friendship Quilt” using lots of different fabric squares that vary in shape, size, and texture. At this center little ones will be working on cooperative play, sharing, completing a task, and teamwork.
Teddy Bear Petting Zoo. Little ones will enjoy getting to pet, squeeze, and love on a variety of stuffed animals as we explore sharing, turn taking, and pretend play. At this center there will also be blankets, food dishes, and “treats” for your little ones to use as they interact with our “pets”.
Family. As we explore the theme of, “family” you and your little one will get the opportunity to create your family in a fun, artistic way. Preschoolers will be using sticks, googly eyes, strips of fabric, and glue to create their families while Toddlers use Do-A-Dot markers, circle stickers, markers, and sheets of paper to create theirs. Both groups will be working on compare and contrast, fine motor control, pretend play, following directions, and completing a project.
Valentine’s Day. You can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day without creating a Valentine! This week we will be working on creating a beautiful, heart-shaped Valentine for a loved one. Creating something for someone else is a great skill to develop even at a young age!
Friendship. This week in our play classes we will be creating a collaborative friendship art piece! Each child will get a piece of our mural to paint however they choose, then at the end of class we will trade pieces so each person will get a gift from a friend. :) This mural will work on skills like color mixing, sharing, and working together as a team.
Pets. Who let the dogs out??? We will be using plastic animals to create a fun stamping experience for our little ones as we work on dipping, stamping, following directions, creating a pattern, and process oriented art.
Gross Motor|Cooperative Play:
Family. As we talk about loving our families it only seems fitting to include the art of cleaning up! Little ones will enjoy playing a fun game of hide & seek with our “toys” that need to be put away. Children will also work on spatial awareness, completing a task, working together, categorizing, and being a helper.
Valentine’s Day. It’s time for a “Heart Hop”! You and your little one will enjoy hopping on the different colored hearts, jumping over giant licorice, and balancing on a sticky sucker stick. This center will focus on balance, gross motor movement, turn taking, following directions, and patience. Toddler modification will include climbing and crawling activities and will be guided as free play instead of as a “game”.
Friendship. Our preschool friends will enjoy a sampling of some of our favorite cooperative play board games! Working together to play a game is a great way to celebrate friendship! Our toddler friends will enjoy playing our favorite “first” game called Roll-n-Play. This game works on emotions, body movement, counting, and other toddler based skills!
Pets. Preschoolers will get their bodies moving with pet themed yoga! Toddlers will enjoy playing a fun game of “fetch” with our giant balls. :) Skills include gross motor movement, following directions, focus, and pretend play.
Family. Continuing with the theme of loving our family by being a good helper our preschool friends will enjoy our “Dish Soap Putty” center! There will be cups, plates, bowls, and spoons to “wash” and place in the drying rack as we learn and explore with our whole bodies. This skill-based center is a great opportunity to work on role play. Our toddler friends will enjoy a modified version of this as we explore “washing” our dishes with real blown bubbles and some pretend (various balls) bubbles!
Valentine’s Day. Preschool friends will enjoy exploring our “Sweet Kool Aid Slime” as we work on tactile play, squishing, smooshing, and stretching. This activity truly engages the WHOLE body! Toddler friends will enjoy our heart themed bubble stomp! Using our little feet we will stomp. hop, and kick our bubble covered hearts. Who doesn’t enjoy some good ole’ bubble wrap? :)
Friendship. This week we will work on our storytelling skills as we poke our stick puppets into some squishy dough! Work with a friend and come up with one BIG story to tell! Toddlers will enjoy a modified “baby safe” dough experience as they work on parallel play, squishing, rolling, and poking with their hands.
Pets. Preschoolers will enjoy exploring and caring for our classroom “fish” as we dive into our fish tank sensory bin. Toddlers will enjoy a modification of this activity as they squish, smash, and poke our mess-free fish tank sensory bags!
We like to… MOVE it! Each week of class we will work on three different types of movement songs. One song about our body, one song about our world, and one song about our theme. Every song will be fun, engaging, and catchy enough that you and your little one will want to keep singing them at home… we hope!
Our song and movement time will take place during opening and closing circle times. At these times we work on following instructions, listening, taking turns, being respectful, and creating a routine for your little one to look forward to. Each opening circle will also include an on-theme book that will be read aloud to help introduce the class’ theme.
